January 19
we have been to San Juan del Sur in Nicaragua.
The ship
anchored up, and lowered the lifeboats that took us ashore. (It was really a
surprise to me that we used the lifeboats so I lost a bet on that)
The
population is around 6 million people, they have 42 volcanos (7 active), and
Lake Nicaragua with the only freshwater shark (!) in the world.
The people
of Nicaragua speak several languages, and the most common is Spanish and
English. Sadly the unemployment is very high 47%. Good thing though is that every
child must go to school, and the schools are free.
We were met
by dancers and music. And of course a market where they are selling lots of
handicraft and souvenirs.
We played
at the beach and went for a little walk in the center.
For 3 Coca
Cola we paid 2 USD, and then in the next door market they asked for 112 USD for
a t-shirt. Go figure!
We took a tour with a bus to see glimpse of
Nicaragua. First stop was Rivas, were we visited a church (In Nicaragua there
are 75 % Catholics, 20% Protestants, and 5% unbelievers, as our tour guide put
it).
From Rivas
the bus took us to a resort by Lake Nicaragua with the sharks.
Fruit
break. It tasted great!
On the way
back, the bus suddenly stopped, and right outside of the bus in the trees where
the monkeys.
Next stop
San Francisco, January 25
